Question: Can you recommend some flowers I can plant so I can have fresh cut flowers?
There are lots of easy to grow annuals that make great cut flowers, including:
- Sunflowers
- Tithonia
- Zinnia
- Coreposis
- Cosmos
- Bachelor Buttons
- Larkspur
- Snapdragons
- Asters
- Pansies and Johnny-jump-ups for tiny bouquets
If you want a cutting garden that you don’t have to start from scratch every year, add some perennials too, like:
- Aster
- Astilbe
- Coneflower
- Baby’s breath
- Peony
- Daylilies
- Lupine
- Lavender
Don’t forget spring bulbs too. You can create beautiful arrangements with daffodils and tulips during their brief appearance. Many plants have attractive seedheads, which can be harvested throughout the fall and even into winter. And of course roses are the classic cut flower.
You might want to consider a wildflower mix, for a natural, “airy” feeling bouquet.
Important Tip: Keep deadheading, or trimming off, spent blossoms to encourage the plant to continue producing flowers, rather than spending its energy on seed production.
